Mangifera indica L.
There are dozens of variety of mango family, varying in fragrance and flavour from sublime to unpleasant.
Origin and Distribution
Native to Southern Asia, especially eastern India, Burma, and the Andaman Islands, the mango has been cultivated, praised and even revered in its homeland since ancient times. Buddhist monks are believed to have taken the mango on voyages to Malaysia and eastern Asia in the 4th and 5th Centuries B.C. (Quoted from Julia F. Morton’s book: Fruits of warm climates)
Uses of Mango
Mangoes can be divided into two broad categories: those that are eaten green (not ripe) and dessert mangoes enjoyed for their sweetness.
Mangoes normally reach maturity in 4 to 5 months from flowering. When the mango is fully grown and ready for picking, the stem will snap easily with a slight pull. If a strong pull is necessary, the fruit is still somewhat immature and should not be harvested.
